Interview with Franck Ribiere by Johnny C of www.loudmetal.com

the French guitarist Franck Ribiere has just released his excellent solo album "Bloody Karma" which you can listen to right here at LOUD METAL RADIO.

How would you describe your music to someone who don't know you?

Well, my music is 100% instrumental, with lots of Guitar melodies, solos in a Metal-Progressive context. But you don’t need to be a musician to appreciate it, that was my goal before doing this new record. Finding a good balance between “guitar virtuosity” and most of all “musicality” was very important. I’ve done a lot of promotion with the French press and it seems to work!!

Who are your main influences?

From 15 to 25 the kind of music I was listening to was 90% instrumental guitar musics. I’ve begun with the most famous like Satriani, Steve Vai, Malmsteen but years after years there was always new amazing guitarists like Jason Becker & Marty Friedman, Paul Gilbert, Mac Alpine... But if I have to say today who has had the biggest influence on me I would say Steve Vai, Shawn Lane, Frank Gambale and Marty Friedman. Today I focus more on real bands like Symphony X, Masterplan, Evergrey, the French metal band Adagio.. I’m definitely more Metal oriented than other music styles!!

How does this album differ to your previous "Double Heart Project"?

First thing, my old friend Vincent Fabre from Double Heart Project has done a fantastic job on the drums so no machine there! Concerning the music I think it’s more mature, may be more “progressive”. And to finish the production is better! On the new Album there is no guested famous guitarists, I think it was cool for a first one to say “Chris Poland from Megadeth, and Cyril Achard play guitar on my CD!!!” but not for all Albums. This time I was looking for some keyboard sounds, and the Italian vistuoso Mistheria accepted my invitation. The result is amazing, this musician was THE one I was looking for!!

Where and how did you record the album and how long did it take?

Everything has been done in Vincent’s new recording studio. It has been a full time job during 8 months !! We thought it was time for us to really learn how to record, make a mix, master etc... That’s why it was so long. But now we feel completely free for the next record!!

What kind of amplifiers and guitars did you use on this album and/or live?

I used my Ibanez Prestige guitar, a Yahama custom guitar and one of Cyril Achard’s Lag guitar. Cyril is a good friend of mine. We have tried many configurations with different amplifiers, and believe me the best was a POD directly in the console. We are actually working on new sound, and it seems we have found something good with a mic in front of a big Marshall cabinet connected to a Carvin amp :))

Do you plan to tour to support this album, and is there a scene for music like this in France?

You know, making a tour seems to be impossible for that kind of music in France and surely many others. We have begun to make some occasional shows, I hope it will continue and go in the good direction.

These days every musician seem to be member of several bands and most bands are no real bands, just studio projects. What do you think about this situation?

Please give me some band names!! ;o) More seriously I don’t think it can be a problem. Some people say that today there are too many bands but I think we should say that it’s freedom! If it doesn’t work fine for these “studio bands” I think they will stop because making a record and promote it  take a lot of money and time…

For the Lion Music release "Shawn Lane Remembered" you recorded a track as "Double Heart Project". Was Shawn Lane a big influence on you?

Yes absolutly. Like I said before, one of my biggest influence. Shawn was a truly unique musician and no one will play like him. Concerning the Tribute Album I really thanks Lasse from Lion Music he has been so cool to accept our participation.

What can we expect next from you?

We are actually re-recording a track from the first Album “Human Nature’s Fight” for a french Metal compilation. It’s going to be very loud !! After that we will search for a singer, a new bass player and then we will be ready to record our first non-instrumental Album !!

Anything else that you would like to add?

I really would like to thank you for your support, and wish you all the best for your Radio. To all the readers, come to www.doubleheartproject.com and let us a message!!
